Hello Coreen,
I'm almost positive I have a "Swimmer Puppy".  She is flat and her chest is flattened.  She started shaking and sleeping more and when I picked her up, I noticed her rib cage was flattened.  I did a scan of the net and found this website.
I had the pups in a whelping box with cedar chips, but Mom pushed them aside exposing slick concrete.  I had no idea this would cause a problem.  I am try to figure out the "sock" method.  But not sure I understand it.  Where exactly do I put the cotton?  And the pictures I've seen seem to show the legs coming all the way through the holes instead of stopping at the elbow.  This darling puppy is so sweet and I want to save her!  Thanks for your input!

Christy,,
the sock does come up all the way on the legs.  The cotton fits under the chest and around the legs. Good luck.

Coreen,

I just wanted to let you know that my little "swimmer" has fully recovered. I just know if I had taken her into the vet, he would've suggested to put her down.  Her rib cage was so flattened, I thought she'd never develop normally.  The sock method worked wonders, and within just a few days, she began to try and walk.  (She was just shy of 4 weeks when I found her flattened like a pancake.)  She now runs, romps, jumps, bites, plays, and is perfectly healthy.  For a while, I could still tell she had a little bit of a flattened rib cage, but today when I picked her up, I couldn't tell at all.  This sock method saved her life and will allow a family have a wonderful little girl as a companion.  Thank you for your website!  I"ve attached a picture of her after she'd been wearing the sock for a couple of days.  Her left leg front adjusted quickly, but her right let still stuck out a bit.  But, you can see, how after just 2 days, she's already trying to bring her feet forward.  (They both were to the side).  I'll send you an after picture in a few days, and you will see how well she recovered!

Blessings,
Christy  from OK (Golden Retriever Swimmer...now 6 weeks old!)
